Meet Project Ethiopia Board Member, Asemenech Afework
Asamenech grew up in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and has lived in the US for over 40 years. She has worked in retail business and banking, and has recently retired from over 30 years working with the City of Seattle Public Utilities in their finance and customer service departments. Asamenech has been on the board of Project Ethiopia for 2 years and is currently serving as treasurer of our board. Asamenech has previously been a board member with the Ethiopian Community in Seattle, (ECS) as well as the Emmanuel Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and still volunteers with ECS.
“Everyone on the Board has made a personal commitment to the cause of supporting development in rural Ethiopia. The hard work of the board and staff are inspiring, and the results are truly amazing!”
As Board Treasurer, Asamenech serves on the Executive Committee as well as the Fundraising Committee of Project Ethiopia. She finds her committee work interesting and engaging. Asamenech especially appreciates the dedication of all the Board members.
What inspires Asamenech most about the Project is the difference we are making in the lives of ordinary people in Ethiopia. “I know personally how difficult life is in Ethiopia, especially lately. We are helping people to improve their lives in fundamental ways, through education, healthy homes, and economic resilience, and we are working to help improve their lifestyle. People who donate to Project Ethiopia trust what we are doing, and they see how many people we have helped, which is why they keep on giving so generously.”
Asamenech envisions Project Ethiopia growing stronger, expanding our reach, and helping even more people in rural Ethiopia. “I am also very excited to travel to Dangla myself, along with other board members, so we can meet and get to know each other on a personal level. Only when we experience their environment first hand can we really appreciate the challenges they are facing on the ground, and the best ways we can support them. I believe the Ethiopians would be really delighted to meet more of the people who are behind this Project.”
Thank you for your dedication, Asamenech!
